Compact she may be, yet do not be fooled, as Agapanthus ‘Charlotte’ is strong sassy and showy. An abundance of large, rounded flowerheads will stop you in your tracks. Strong, supple stems hold clusters of trumpet-shaped, starry blue blooms, each petal with a dark blue stripe. Forming almost globe-like spheres, held high above broad strap-shaped foliage, all summer long. Perfect at the front of borders, in containers or for those with limited space, this cute African Lily creates a breathtaking display. The cut stems last up for two weeks in a vase, so Agapanthus ‘Charlotte’ also adds a superb pizzazz to your indoor floral arrangements. Native to Southern Africa, said to be brought to Europe in the 17th century, the name comes from the Greek ‘agape’ meaning love, and ‘anthos’ meaning flower, hence the common name, Flower of Love. Most eye-catching when planted in groups Agapanthus ‘Charlotte’ grows well in coastal areas, fully able to cope with salty sea breezes. Bees and butterflies will come for a feast on her nectar-rich blooms. Agapanthus ‘Charlotte’ prefers to be grown in well-drained soil and full sun for the best display. Reaching a height and spread of 45-60cm – shorter when grown in containers – she is hardy (H4) and semi-evergreen in most areas of the UK, although some winter protection may be required in the very coldest and wettest of winters.
