Hardy and heavenly, exotic orchid blooms. Bletilla were one of the first orchid varieties to be admired and cultivated in the UK, going as far back at the 18th century. Nowadays they are occasionally spotted growing wild in woodland but are mostly cultivated in a laboratory so that they can still be enjoyed and preserved for generations to come. The enchanting flowers emerge in June and July, held in multiples on strong, upright stems above strap-like foliage which is retained from March to September. Your Bashful Bletilla Collection comprises striata ‘Soryu Blue Dragon’ in rich magenta purple shades with the propensity to bloom earlier in May; striata ‘Alba Variegata’ in pure white shades with intriguing, variegated foliage; and ‘Penway Sunset grex’ with its beautifully marked and dappled petals in shades of yellow, pink and cream.
