Bletilla were one of the first orchid varieties to be admired and cultivated in the UK, going as far back at the 18th century. In the 21st century, occasionally they are spotted growing wild in woodland, but most often are cultivated in a laboratory.Growing these exotic looking beauties need not be as mystifying as they appear, in fact they are surprisingly simple to grow in our climate. Plant your mature bare roots on arrival into moist, fertile soil which is well-drained in partial shade and Bletilla will thrive. These charming plants naturalise easily in the right area adding intrigue and beauty to your borders when they flower in early to mid-summer.The alluring blooms are borne several at a time on stems up to 60cm tall. Strap-like foliage spreads to between 30-45cm, remaining attractive all year round unlike most other Orchids. These wonderful hardy perennials can also be grown in pots, allowing you to bring them undercover for added winter protection. Outdoor grown Bletilla should be protected with mulch or fleece in colder areas to protect the pseudobulbs which sit close to the surface of the soil.
