From May until June, the waxy, white, miniature bell-shaped flowers of Convallaria majalis emit a powerful, sweet fragrance. Originating from light woodland and alpine meadows throughout northern temperate regions, this tough, robust perennial is suitable for naturalising in wild or woodland gardens, as well as damp borders. Foliage is broad and glossy, flowers are held on nodding, arching racemes. A favourite amongst florists, lily of the valley makes an excellent cut flower, allowing their scent to be enjoyed indoors too. Convallaria majalis prefer to be grown in leafy, fertile, humus-rich soil which benefits from full sun or partial shade. Hardy, deciduous perennials, reaching a height and spread of 25-30cm.
