Hydrangea paniculata ‘Fraise Melba’ is a beautiful new sister to the well-loved ‘Vanilla Fraise’. Very large conical flowerheads, are composed of many small blooms. First opening crisp ivory white, each flower matures gradually changing colour to bright strawberry pink then darker shades of purple. The lower blooms start first, giving a dramatic two-tone display from July to September. The flowerheads are held on strong stems which offer support without flopping. Reaching an eventual height of 2m, and spreading to 1.5m, Hydrangea paniculata ‘Fraise Melba’ is best placed at the rear of a border where it will provide a wonderful backdrop to other plants. Preferring to be in sun or partial shade, ‘Fraise Melba’ likes a humus-rich soil. The stems of Paniculata Hydrangeas can be pruned hard in spring as blooms are borne on fresh growth.
