New to us for 2024 this is a triumphant hybrid of bergenia and mukdenia. Mukgenia ‘Nova Flame’ has large, leathery and robust foliage, which emerges in early spring. Leaves have a glossy sheen and serrated edges with red accents and forms lush mounds which develop richer, red hues in autumn before dying back over winter. In April long, strong stems emerge holding sprays of dark pinkish-red blooms, bringing fiery colour to your borders and pots. Best suited to a woodland garden where it receives a degree of shade, ‘Nova Flame’ will, however, tolerate sunshine or full shade too.
Plant Mukgenia ‘Nova Flame’ in moist, well-drained soil of any type except clay. A hardy, herbaceous perennial which was developed in by Chuck Pavlich in Oregon, USA and is sure to become a favourite for adding splashes of intense colour from spring into summer. A great way to add colour when spring bulbs are fading and summer blooms just beginning to perform.
