Waldsteinia ternata, commonly known as Siberian Barren Strawberry, is a fully hardy, low-growing perennial in the Rosaceae family. Native to Europe and Asia, dense mats of rich green, trifoliate leaves resemble strawberry plants but do not produce edible fruit. This evergreen ground cover reaches about 10-15cm in height and spreads to around 60cm with creeping rhizomes, making it an excellent choice for suppressing weeds and stabilizing soil. In spring, bright yellow, buttercup-like flowers appear, adding a splash of colour to your shaded or partially shaded areas. Waldsteinia ternata thrives in moist, well-drained soil but is highly adaptable to various conditions, including poor soils. Drought-tolerant once established it will happily withstand cold climates being fully hardy down to -20°C and lower. Widely used in woodland gardens, rock gardens, and as an alternative to grass in low-traffic areas. Its low maintenance and ability to provide year-round greenery make it a favourite for gardeners looking for a resilient and decorative groundcover.
